This wine presents intense tropical fruit fragrances like: pineapple, mango, papaya, and passion fruit. Aromas of peach and pineapple complement a finish of crisp tartness and vanilla.  To achieve the perfect balance, the wine was aged for eight months in 79% stainless steel, 14% new and 7% seasoned French oak. This ancient Rhône varietal is finding modern popularity as an intriguing alternative to Chardonnay. Winemaking Notes: Hand picked and vineyard sorted on a very cold morning in October. The grapes were then destemmed and cold soaked for 2 days. The fruit then went straight to the bladder press for a light pressing. The must was cold fermented in stainless steel for about 2 weeks to retain fruity notes and then allowed to undergo Malo-Lactic fermentation. The wine was aged for 8 months in 50% neutral French oak and 50% stainless steel to conserve tropical aromas.

We've had numerous bottles of both Chardonnays and Viogniers but this one was a very different and pleasant surprise. Whereas both of those wines can be so-so in character, the Oso Libre Volado 2011 had a very crisp fruity taste that borders on rather "sharp" on the palate for a white wine. Not a smooth, mellow finish but certainly robust in the mouth with a noticeable mineral finish reminiscent of the limestone in that area. It's very delicious all by itself. We know what we like and the Volado 2011 as a real change from common chardonnays.
